Egyptian Maus LOVE our cat furniture and exercise wheels
|

Often times, retired breeding cats have spent much of their adult life in the cat house
(aka "cattery") where they have been able to run and play all they want. They are used
to having multi level shelves, climbing toys, cat trees, exercise wheels, etc and don't
have human imposed house rules to stay off of or out of anything, so will need
patience there too in learning your expectations, much like a kitten learns as he
grows up in your home. Retired cattery cats have had to follow the feline house rules
rather than human house rules, so now have to relearn.
"What do you mean the kitchen is not a jungle gym?" All of mine do get some house
time, but mine is "cat proof". The kitchen is a no cat zone (hey I hate hair in my food just
as much as anyone else). I don't have knick knacks anymore, and they are used to the
shelves being for them, you may want to pack away any breakables while we learn the
new house rules.
Maus are good cats who want to please their family. They need very gentle training.
Once they know your rules, they are happy to oblige. This breed is extremely intelligent,
and also emotional. You cannot be harsh with them on their mistakes because they
take it much harder than most cats, and they do seem to hold grudges. Positive, loving
training methods work wonders. However, they will also train you of their expectations.
You'll be so in love you won't even realize how you ended up being the one fetching
the toy as s/he keeps tossing it.
Many cats prefer to sleep in high places - the top of the fridge is a popular spot, that
once discovered you may not be able to break a Mau from staking claim to. It's high
and warm! Many of mine never go up there, while others own it and keep kindly
reminding me to keep my junk of their bed. (I have 2 in the cattery).
I'm just trying to give some examples, and making the point to keep in mind, when you
adopt a retired 'working' cat, they have had a different lifestyle than a typical house pet
so you both have some adjustments and they need patience to adjust as well. In
return you get an awesome cat that's higher quality than pet and a lower purchase
price. Of course I always say Maus are priceless! Each one has their own unique
personality.
Nothing said here is about any particular cat, just generalized examples.
All the cats I put up here are litter trained! Stress can contribute to an accident if they
have too much area too soon. Maybe get spooked, and/or lost.
They should have a small room with all their needs right there to settle in for the first
few days after arrival - I'll get into that with you if you do bring one of my kids home.
The info below, I wrote up as a general info statement, as I do also have other breeds.
Most of my Maus actually do not spray, even my studs. (uhm should I be knocking on
wood right now or something?) But in the past some have, and may end up with one
again. I leave this up for your general info and to keep in mind if you are shopping
around for a retiree ... I've heard from too many people who bought a cat from Soinso
Orother and it was a nightmare because of all the surprises and lies. Other breeders
hate me because I'm so open with the truth, but that's just how I roll.
When adopting a retiring stud cat, (former breeding male) there are a few things that
must be understood. One thing I do have to point out first, most stud cats spray
(urine)!!
to mark their territory. Neutering is the only cure for this, however neutering alone does
not always work. We hope that will stop when he is neutered but there is no way to
guarantee this will work. Most retired studs do stop spraying in time, but may mark
their new home just a little before stopping completely ... It is very rare that one may not
stop at all :-/ (there's often another issue in the home in this case)
THIS is why our retired studs are usually so much less expensive than retiring
females and of course less than kittens. Also the reason you may see the same cat for
sale for such a long time. It's difficult to find just the right home with the patience and
understanding to take the risk in getting a stud transitioning into a housepet. I won't put
a cat into a home I don't think will work, nor will I withhold info in hopes of making a
sale. The RIGHT home is my criteria. If I gave a rip about making money I would have
found another way ions ago. Despite how it looks, this is an expensive hobby, not
some great income. Good breeders who do it "right" don't make much if any profit.
Yeah those prices go right back into the care of the cats! ... But that's another topic!
I have developed a routine that has been very successful with most of, if not all, my
previous retired studs. It is a lot of extra effort on my part, but I feel I owe it to my boys to
help them learn to be proper pets when it's their turn to become a pet. I want my cats to
fit into their homes, and be a perfect match that lasts a lifetime, so I do my best to be
up front with all the possibilities so there are no surprises. And, I do my best to
prevent unwanted behaviours from continuing.
With all that in mind, I welcome serious inquiries on my retiring boys as they come
up and will be happy to discuss my process with you that I have been successful in
preventing continued marking. You will still be expected to be prepared for follow up
steps, and possibly products to help - just in case. Usually not needed.
Females can also spray while "whole". Most of mine do not. When females spray
(usually) it's hormone induced ... Meaning if after several heats they still don't get bred
they will spray to let the boys know where they are and once bred it stops. This is
usually not a set habit so almost always the spay does cure that.

Retiring female - Raziel Reign Bad Moon Rising - aka "Little Moon"
This is a little sister of RazielReign Rockstar -TICA's BEST EGYPTIAN
MAU INTERNATIONALLY 2009 among several other credits.
Lovely silver female, very sweet. Not at all "Bad" it's just a name.
This girl is not as flashy as the others in my program, but her super
sweet nature makes up for all that. It's why I kept her. My program
selectivley breeds for temperament as well as looks and health. I
knew her matched up to Kryptonite would be wonderful results. Well,
she has other plans. She has let me know her interests is to be a pet
and not a mommy. I have no doubt she will make herself right at home
in just about any family.
3 years old.
